| MY REMINISCENCES OF EAST AFRICA by General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck The recollections of the German Commanding General in German East Africa (now Tanzania) in World War I. He conducted a remarkable guerilla campaign, and only surrendered some two weeks after the German collapse in 1918. His opponent for much of the campaign was an equally famous name in the annals of guerilla warfare - Jan Christaan Smuts - but von Lettow proved more than a match for his Boer opposite number. His forces never consisted of more than 3000 Germans and 11,000 Askaris, whilst his opponents had over 100,000 men in the field from the British, Indian, South African, French, Belgian and Portuguese armies. Reprint of a classic work of the Great War illustrated with 22 maps and 13 beautiful and unusual drawings executed by Lettow-Vorbeck’s talented adjutant.2004, Naval & Military Press, , 1843429500,< D-04>,336pp, maps, drawings, New in card cover, , CARDSubject...World War I - Other TheatresWeb No. 8453-02..............................£18.00 |

| ISONZO: THE FORGOTTEN SACRIFICE OF THE GREAT WAR by John R Schindler This is the first account in English of a much-overlooked, but important, First World War battlefront located in the mountains astride the border between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Not well known in the West, the battles of Isonzo were nevertheless ferocious, casualties totalling over 1.75 million. In sharp contrast to claims that neither the Italian nor the Austrian armies were viable fighting forces, Schindler aims to bring the terrible sacrifices endured by both armies back to their rightful place in the history of 20th century Europe. The Habsburg Empire, he contends, lost the war for military and economic reasons rather than for political or ethnic ones. 2001, Praeger Publishers, , 0275972046,< D-04>,409pp, 15 b/w illustrations, New in illustrated boards., , Subject...World War I - Other TheatresWeb No. 31486-01..............................£48.75 |
| THE WHITE WAR : LIFE AND DEATH ON THE ITALIAN FRONT 1915 - 1919 by Mark Thompson A million and half men died in North East Italy when Italy declared war on the Habsburg Empire in May 1915. Led by General Luigi Cadorna waves of Italian conscripts were sent charging up the limestone hills north of Trieste to be massacred by troops fighting to save their homelands. This is a great, tragic military history of a war that gave birth to fascism. Mussolini fought in these trenches, but so did some of the greatest modernist writers in Italian and German including Ungaretti, Gadda, Musil and Hemingway. 2008, Faber & Faber, , 9780571223336,< D-04>,454pp Maps. | FORGOTTEN SOLDIERS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR by David R Woodward We know a great deal about Lawrence of Arabia but what about the lot of the common soldier who fought on the Middle Eastern Front? Using personal accounts from the diaries and letters of British soldiers who served in the First World War,the author describes the experience of combat in Egypt and Palestine. Drawing upon unpublished records in the Imperial War Museum, he paints a vivid picture of life for the British Tommy in conditions vastly different from the Western Front, where heat, sand storms and insects proved just as deadly as the enemy.2006, Tempus, , 0752438549,< D-04>,318pp, illustrations., Near Fine in like dw, , Subject...World War I - Other TheatresWeb No. 35934-01..............................£8.00 |
