MYTHS & LEGENDS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR
by James Hayward

Accounts of the First World War usually centre on gruelling life in the trenches. This book gives a refreshingly different perspective by looking at the rich crop of legends that sprang from the battlefields. Tales such as the Angel of Mons and the unexplained disappearance of a whole Territorial battalion of the Norfolk Regiment at Gallipoli are still debated today. Using a wide range of contemporary sources, Hayward retells the story of each myth with possible explanations for how they came about. Illustrated with a variety of contemporary photographs.

UNDER THE SHADOW: LETTERS OF LOVE AND WAR 1911-1917
by Brid Hetherington

Typical of thousands of young men at the time, Hugh Mann a student of Divinity in Glasgow fell in love with Jessie, a first year Arts student at the University of Glasgow. When Jessie became pregnant the full force of Scottish middle class prejudices was brought to bear on them. The letters are testimony to a different age. On 17 October 1914, he enlisted for Lochiel's Camerons, that same day he married Jessie. He survives Loos and Arras but died from injuries received at Passchendaele in October 1917. The last eight letters written by Jessie to Hugh were returned to her after his death.
