THE GREAT BOER WAR

This major work has long been recognised as one of the most important books written on the Anglo Boer War. Whilst working as a surgeon with British forces Conan-Doyle spent much of his time questioning British and Boer wounded in the field hospitals. He spoke to soldiers ranking from generals to cavalry troopers and, with a meticulous eye for detail, produced this balanced account showing the viewpoints of both protagonists. First published in October 1900, this 19th edition is recognised as the final complete work from which this volume has been reproduced as a facsimile reprint.

THE PLAINS OF ABRAHAM

An account of General James Wolfe's famous battle in 1759 which secured Canada for the British. It was a pivotal engagement in the North American theatre of the Seven Years' War. The confrontation, which began on September 12, 1759, was fought between the British Army and Navy, and the French Army on a plateau just outside the walls of Quebec City. Wolfe successfully broke the column advance of French forces under Louis-Joseph, Marquis de Montcalm. Both generals were mortally wounded during the battle. Wolfe died on the field and Montcalm passed away the next morning.

HAVELOCK 1795-1857

Henry Havelock was a British general noted for his recapture of Kanpur from rebels during the Indian Mutiny. In 1857 he relieved Lucknow from siege, but was caught in another siege. He died a few days after it was lifted. Commisioned into the 13th Foot, he also served in the Burmese War, Afghanistan, the Forty-Eight Hour War, the Sikh War and the Persian War.
