THE EMPEROR'S LAST VICTORY
by Gunther Rothenberg

In July 1809 Napoleon crossed the Danube with 187,000 men to confront the Austrian Archduke Charles and his 145,000 strong army at Wagram on the plains east of Vienna. The Austrians fought with great determination, but eventually the Emperor won a narrow victory, the day being carried by superior French firepower. Napoleon’s artillery fired more than 71,000 rounds. Wagram compelled Austria to make peace and heralded a new order of warfare, anticipating the massed manpower and weight of fire deployed later in the battles of the American Civil War and at Verdun and on the Somme. The author uses both French sources and extensive Austrian archives to tell the story of this immense engagement. Appendices include Orders of Battle for the actions at Aspern - Essling, and Wagram itself

WAR TO THE DEATH
by Raymond Rudorff

The 1808-9 Sieges of Saragossa in the Peninsular War. A French army under General Lefebvre besieged, repeatedly stormed, and was repulsed from the Spanish city over the summer of 1808. The Second Siege is widely considered one of the most brutal battles in the history of Napoleonic warfare due to the the extreme brutality and vicious street fighting which occured. The battle is perhaps best summed up by General Palafox's reply to the French upon being asked whether he would consider an armistice: "War to the knife."

THE DISCOVERY OF EGYPT
by Terence M Russell

Vivant Denon's travels with Napoleon's army. Denon was known as 'Napoleon's eye'. He was Bonaparte's adviser on artistic matters, accompanying him to Egypt where he witnessed the battle of the Nile and travelled in Upper and Lower Egypt. He was, in effect, the first war artist, always by Bonaparte's side, or that of his generals, feverishly recording the events unfolding before him. The author tells the story of Denon's travels in Egypt, using his "Journeys in Upper and Lower Egypt" as the basis for a vivid and moving account of the discovery of ancient Egypt.
