The Second World War made the greatest demands on the German
Reichsbahn (national railway). Year after year, great quantities of
war materiel were transported – and almost always delivered. At
times the trains rolled over nearly the entire continent of Europe.
This heavily illustrated book documents the everyday life along the
German rail lines on many war fronts. This is the first book of its
kind in English for both the rail enthusiast as well as the military
historian.
Beevor's classic
account of the 1941 Battle for Crete. He recounts the decimation
of the German paratroopers, Freyberg's controversial command and
the role of Ultra intelligence intercepts. The book examines
Laycock's special forces operations, the later resistance movement
and their involvement with SOE, the reckless courage of the
Cretans and the abduction of the German General Kreipe.
Perhaps one of the best known battles in the Italian campaign was
the Battle of Monte Cassino. There was actually a series of four
battles, the first starting on 17 January 1944, and the last on 18
May. Monte Cassino was a key to the German defensive Winter Line
south of Rome, also known as the Gustav Line. The book first
covers the German forces in a series of black-and-white photos,
with many of them featuring the Fallschirmjager paratroopers who
fought so tenaciously. It then looks at the Polish forces,
including both infantry and armoured troops. The book also
contains four colour plates by Dmitriy Zgonnik. These feature a
German paratrooper, a Luftwaffe flak unit trooper, an Oberjager of
the 5.Gebirgs-Division (Mountain Division) and a solitary Pole of
the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division.
