John Elwyn was captured in France before the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940, whilst serving with the Welsh Guards. Imprisoned in POW camps in Upper Silesia and the Sudetanland, he made numerous escape attempt. Finally succeeding, he fell in love with and married a Polish girl, a romance that sadly ended in tragedy. He was aided in his final escape by a warm hearted prostitute who assisted him in escaping to Stockholm. He was later awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
